Dear Commissioner Sadik-Khan and Borough Commissioner Forgione,
We are writing in support of Manhattan Community Board 7fs (CB7) October 6, 2009 resolution requesting that the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) develop a proposal for Class 1 (gprotectedh) bike lanes on Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues from 59th to 110th Streets.
Thus far, according to a survey completed by the Upper West Side Streets Renaissance Campaign, more than 100 businesses along the proposed routes have expressed interest in working with DOT and CB7 to make these bike lanes a reality. We offer our assistance in facilitating as many meetings as are necessary for all stakeholders – residents, affected businesses and their respective Business Improvement Districts, senior centers, non-profit organizations, uniformed services and others – to be consulted.
We ask that your proposal contain information on the impacts that protected bike lanes would have on these stakeholders, and that CB7 have ample opportunity to review and comment on the plan. We are confident that your agency will continue to engage the community and incorporate its input as we move forward with this process.
DOTfs ongoing effort to encourage safe, environmentally friendly and healthy modes of transportation in our City is commendable, and we look forward to working with you to make the Upper West Side a better to place to live, work and visit.
